The April 13 Gazelle Girl Half Marathon is much more than a race. It’s about celebrating the fortieth anniversary of Title IX—the law that made discrimination between men’s and women’s educational programs illegal—and raising money for three nonprofit organizations that support women and girls in Kent County. Gazelle Sports partnered with Nike to bring the inaugural all-women half marathon to West Michigan. A companion Gazelle Girl 5k will take place the same day.

The Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR), a nonprofit focused on sustainable community development, released the findings of its sixth annual Independent Business Survey. Conducted in partnership with dozens of business organizations, the survey gathered data from 2,377 independent businesses across all fifty states. Among its findings:

Faye Richardson-Green, a long-time diversity and inclusion leader and Steelcase Inc. director of Global Learning & Development, was named 2013 Diversity Visionary Award recipient by the Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce. Richardson-Green will be honored with this prestigious award at a March 20 celebration at the Frederick Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.

Ele’s Place, a twenty-one-year-old healing center for grieving children and teens in Lansing and Ann Arbor, will open a center in Grand Rapids this spring. Ele’s Place seeks caring adults to volunteer as facilitators with its children’s support groups. People of diverse ethnicities, males, and bilingual individuals are particularly encouraged to apply; however, any interested adult is welcome to submit a volunteer application for this rewarding opportunity.
