The nation’s first-ever community-wide festival of laughter, Gilda’s LaughFest, announced its first round of talent and shows lined up for the festival’s fourth year to be held March 6-16, 2014. The headliners announced include: Lily Tomlin, making a special appearance in partnership with Broadway Grand Rapids; Chris Tucker; and LaughFest veterans, Jim Gaffigan, and Sinbad. This year’s Signature Event will feature Emmy award winning comedian, longtime TV personality and late-night talk show host Jay Leno. Several other acts were also announced for LaughFest, along with a “$50,000 Challenge” by five local companies to raise funds specifically for Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids Children’s cancer, grief, and emotional health programs.

Gilda’s LaughFest officials have launched LaughFest Friends, a new membership program. Members will receive a variety of benefits, including VIP access to the November 12 headlining artists announcement launch party, which will be held at 7:30 a.m. at the Grand Rapids Art Museum, 101 Monroe Center, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a members-only party to be scheduled in December.

Earlier this year, the Grand Rapids Symphony announced the addition of a new chamber music series to its musically diverse lineup. Great Eras, a three-concert series sponsored by Crowe Horwath, was designed to explore different periods of orchestral music—Classical, Baroque, and Romantic. Comprising fewer musicians than the symphony orchestra, Great Eras’ chamber orchestra instrumentation will allow audiences to experience the Grand Rapids Symphony in a smaller, more intimate setting: the beautiful Royce Auditorium at St. Cecilia Music Center. The new series kicks off with the program The Classical Concert, Friday, November 15, at 8 p.m.

On November 14, 2013, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogynecology Institute of Michigan will host an educational event as part of a national public awareness campaign to help women impacted by pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) and minimize any discomfort regarding having conversations about and seeking treatment for pelvic floor disorders. The campaign, “Break Free from PFDs,” aims to help women understand the facts about PFDs and empower them with information on how to pursue individualized solutions for improved quality of life. The campaign was launched by the PFD Alliance this fall. New research issued by the PFD Alliance finds that ninety percent of Americans underestimate or are unsure about the prevalence of PFDs, which affects approximately one in three women at some point during their lives. This means many women undertreat PFDs and suffer in silence.
