As vibrant colors return to the leaves across West Michigan, we are seeing some exciting trends from our vendors at Farmgirl Flea Markets and local flea markets. From thrifted fashion to that perfect vintage colored glassware and more, here are the five fall finds that are catching everyone's eye this season.
1. Natural Wood Furniture
More people are embracing the raw, authentic grain of vintage wood furniture. Older pieces are durable, but they don't always have the look. Sanding them down to the natural grain is a great way to revitalize an old piece and bring it back to its natural state.
A mid-century dresser or farmhouse table sanded down to its original look creates a timeless foundation that works with any style while celebrating the piece's unique history.
2. Colored Glassware
Colored pieces are having a major moment at marketplaces around the country. From emerald bowls to cobalt blue vintage vases, these vibrant finds add a pop of color to your space, bringing personality and warmth. Plus, each piece comes with its own unique story from the vendor who found it, adding to its charm.
3. Gold Accents
Gold is back, but don't worry, it doesn't have to be actual gold. We've seen more gold vintage pieces popping up at markets, as well as people thrifting and recycling items by adding gold paint to spruce up their finds.
Gold can add a pop of shine and regality to anything from a mirror to a bookend, or even lighting fixtures. Even smaller touches like gold hardware on furniture or picture frames can create depth and make a big impact in your decor.
4. Versatile Indoor and Outdoor Pieces
In Michigan, we know it's important to have items that can work indoors and outdoors, surviving the harshest of winters and hottest of summers. These items include galvanized planters that could be used outside with plants on the porch or inside the kitchen for herbs. Vintage wicker furniture can also thrive outside during the summer, but be put back indoors later in the sunroom when temperatures drop.
This trend is all about blending beauty and practicality, allowing you to use the same beautiful pieces for every season and in any space.
5. Thrifted Fashion
We can't talk thrifting without bringing up clothing trends in the vintage and thrift worlds. Of course, we expect to see plaid getting grabbed off the shelves, as it is a pumpkin patch staple. We also expect to see more structured blazers being used in outfits that are perfect for layering, flowing maxi dresses, and classic wool coats. As prices for fast fashion and traditional stores continue to rise, we expect to see more people heading to flea markets and thrift stores. Thrifted clothing is more cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable. You can find pieces you wouldn't find anywhere else.
The Hunt Continues
These fall trends show a shift toward sustainable, story-rich pieces that bring character to our homes and wardrobes. Whether you're a seasoned thrifter and vintage treasure hunter or you're just getting started, there's never been a better time to explore flea markets in West Michigan.
The thrill of finding that perfect piece full of history, character, and a story to tell never gets old. You can experience that at the upcoming Farmgirl Flea Fall Market on September 26-27, 2025, featuring more than 180 vendors, live music, food trucks, and family-friendly fun!
