If you're feeling like a closet revamp is in your future, it just might be time to reevaluate what wardrobe staples you're lacking and jump head first into fall with some fresh fashion. That look you saw someone totally rock and wished you could also wear? Nobody is stopping you—try it out!
If you're looking for guidance, check out our shortlist of items to consider adding to your fall wardrobe this year.
A COLLARED SWEATER AND SWEATER VEST
Throw a little bit of preppy vibes into the mix with a collared sweater this fall and winter. Whether it's fitted or oversized, a sweater with a collar adds interest to an outfit and can also be worn either casually or dressier. Try one of the internet's many tricks for temporarily cropping an oversized sweater to create more looks out of a single piece, in addition to the tried-and-true front tuck into your waistband.
And don't forget about the return of the sweater vest, with varsity stripe options dominating the trend. Throw one over a button up or mock neck long-sleeved top and you've officially taken layering to a whole new level.
A "MINI" SKIRT
Notice that "mini" is in quotes here, because ultimately, style is all about what makes you comfortable and feel like your best self. Choose whatever length suits your style! Skirts are everywhere to be found at the moment, and for good reason. They're a simple way to elevate an outfit, no matter what the occasion is. The options truly are endless: Pair with a satin blouse for work, an oversized sweater for a date night dinner, or a distressed band tee and chunky cardigan for running errands. If you're unsure, search for brands that offer a "tall' option regardless of your height, opt for a skort (which is a trend that has also made its return), or throw a pair of biker shorts underneath your skirt of choice for extra security.
BLACK SHEER TIGHTS
A classic in its own right, black sheer tights are having a moment right now in fashion, popping up everywhere from formal settings to a casual night out with friends. Throw on under a slip dress for a fancy occasion or pair with above mentioned "mini" skirt and chunky boots for a girl's night out and you're off! If you're tired of having to replace your pair after a few wears, consider investing in a pair from a brand like Sheertex, which has gained internet popularity for their comfortable durability.
LEATHER EVERYTHING
The leather trend can be found in almost every form you can think of these days, from pants and skirts to blazers and dresses. With vegan leather taking center stage, it's even easier to get on board with the trend! Thankfully, the old "don't mix black with brown" style tip is long gone, so don't be afraid to experiment! Choosing at least one leather element is the perfect way to elevate an outfit.
A CLASSIC TRENCH
When it's cold enough to need a jacket but not quite cold enough to bust out the puffer, a classic trench coat is always a winner. Not only does a trench make you look like you've got it all together, but they're pieces that have been around for ages at this point, upping your chances of finding a lovely vintage option (perhaps by London Fog) at West Michigan's many second-hand clothing stores.
However you decide to embrace fall and winter this year, don't be afraid to try something new and express your own personal style.
