Shannon Gales first felt pain in her left breast during a long run in late August 2023. When she showered, she confirmed it was a lump.

All the feelings she felt 25 years earlier came rushing back.

Her next several weeks were filled with mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, doctor’s appointments, etc. and it was all too familiar. In September 2023, her second breast cancer diagnosis was confirmed after 24 years in remission.

“The next eight months were grueling with more diagnosis, appointments, surgeries, chemo, radiation and navigating the physical and mental aspects of the battle,” Shannon said. “My faith, and support of my church community, family and network of friends encouraged me and surrounded me.”

Shannon said the work of the American Cancer Society and its programs are crucial to those going through these battles, as well as for their families with the community, support, and information it provides.

“I am grateful that we have such an amazing West Michigan chapter who continue to offer support to those like me,” she said. “Now that I am in active recovery, my husband, our kids, their families and my grandkids are my motivation to live fully into each day! Life is too terribly short to waste it!”

In addition to her family, Shannon said her running community gives her empowerment in her body and keeps her active, while her love of her clients at her bridal design business keeps her inspired and engaged.

“I do intend to be around for many years,” she said. “Despite what the odds are; they are forever in my favor!”

If you've noticed an increase in concierge medical practices in the last few years, you wouldn't be alone. This growing trend in medicine has emerged for a number of reasons. But at its core, it's because medical practitioners have a desire to provide women with the preventative and in-depth care they seek, along with the demand from women also seeking the time, care, and expertise they know they truly deserve.
