What dress options are available to the mother (and mother-in-law) of the bride? Of course, the bride is the star of the show. But you can look fabulous, too. Forego boring, traditional frocks and look less matronly with some sound advice. Let these pointers help lead you down the aisle in style.
"I think every mother of the bride and groom's mother should give themselves permission to look fabulous," said Rebecca Wierda, co-owner of Leigh's. There's no set, preconceived notion of how you should look. Seek out flattering cocktail dresses or clothing that you really feel good in. Consider more modern choices that still reflect who you are. "Feeling confident conveys a wonderful image when you are in front of family and friends at this big event."
Mature women might want to seek out certain cuts or designs that work for them. "A dress with an A-line skirt is flattering and more fitted on top, and helps define your waist—enhancing your figure."
If your dress search is discouraging, don't be afraid to try two pieces: Separates absolutely work!
Color works at all ages. Harness its power. Your color does not need to match the bridal party.
Accessories are essential to completing an outfit. A quiet bodice is the starting point for a great necklace or smaller earring. Make use of more subdued areas where they might be placed.
Never underestimate the shoes. Shoes count, so make sure you have a nice pair that you feel comfortable wearing all night. "It's going to be a long day. Have two pairs—one you wear during the ceremony and one you wear for evening, maybe for dancing."
