Exploring the Science Behind Cancer and Nutrition

Engage with the West Michigan Woman Community!

Although there is no shortage of purported “anti-cancer” diets in popular culture, there are still many unknowns about the relationship between nutrition and cancer.

Van Andel Institute’s Dr. Evan Lien is working to change that. Using the latest technologies, Dr. Lien investigates how certain nutrients affect cancer growth—and works to identify evidence-based dietary strategies to enhance current and emerging cancer treatments.

Dr. Lien, an assistant professor in VAI’s Department of Metabolism and Nutritional Programming, will explore his work in this area during A Conversation About Cancer and Nutrition Hosted by Carol Van Andel on Wednesday, November 13. Attendees will get an inside look at what we know about nutrition’s impact on cancer—and what we don’t—and discuss how new breakthroughs could inform tailored dietary strategies to combat cancer.

In his lab at VAI, Dr. Lien searches for ways to deprive tumors of their fuel sources by exploring the molecular and biochemical interactions between diet, metabolism and cancer. His goal is to develop new prevention and treatment strategies.

The event, hosted by Carol Van Andel and emceed by WOOD-TV’s Maranda, will include a three-course lunch, followed by Dr. Lien’s presentation. A Q&A session will follow, and guests will be able to ask Dr. Lien what questions they have about the relationship between nutrition and cancer.

Individual tickets for A Conversation About Cancer and Nutrition Hosted by Carol Van Andel are $100, and sponsorship opportunities are available. Business attire is suggested, and complimentary valet parking will be offered.

Registration can be found here.
