5 Tips for Creating a Space Where You Can Thrive

I've seen firsthand how the right environment can completely transform not just a space, but the way you feel and function within it. Your surroundings play a powerful role in shaping your mood, productivity and overall well-being.

And let's be honest—life is busy. Between work, family, and trying to find a little time for yourself, your home or office should be a place that supports and uplifts you—not another source of stress.

The good news? You don't need a massive budget or a full-scale renovation to create a home that inspires you. Small, intentional changes can have a big impact. Here are my top five tips to help you cultivate a space that works as hard as you do.

STEP 1: DECLUTTER LIKE YOUR PEACE DEPENDS ON IT
Let's start with the foundation: decluttering. Clutter isn't just an eyesore—it actively disrupts focus, creates stress and makes it harder to relax. Research has shown that too much visual noise can increase anxiety and reduce productivity, and I see this in my clients all the time.

Start with one space that's been overwhelming you—your kitchen counter, desk or that one chair in the bedroom that's become a catch-all for laundry. Set aside 15 to 30 minutes to tackle it with intention. Keep only the things that serve a purpose or bring you joy, and find a home for everything else.

Design Tip: Storage solutions don't have to be ugly! Woven baskets, stylish trays and furniture with hidden compartments can keep clutter at bay while still looking beautiful.

STEP 2: LET THE LIGHT IN
Lighting is one of the most underrated elements in interior design, yet it has an incredible impact on how a space feels. Natural light is the best mood booster, so maximize it wherever you can. Open those blinds, swap heavy curtains for sheer ones, and use mirrors to reflect light and make a room feel bigger and brighter.

For the evening hours, layering lighting is key. Overhead lighting alone can feel harsh; balance it out with table lamps, floor lamps and wall sconces to create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Design Tip: Opt for warm LED bulbs instead of cool white ones for a cozier, more relaxing ambiance.

STEP 3: DEFINE SPACES WITH INTENTION
Your home should work for you, not against you. One of the biggest mistakes I see is when spaces serve too many purposes without clear definition. When your home or office space feels chaotic, your mind follows suit. Instead, create designated zones that support your daily routines:

  • Work Zone: If you work from home, carve out a dedicated space, even if it's just a corner with a small desk and a comfy chair. Keep it clean and inspiring with a pinboard, plants or an uplifting piece of art.
  • Relaxation Zone: Whether it's a reading nook or just a cozy chair with a blanket, make sure you have a space that encourages you to slow down.
  • Daily Essentials Station: Create a drop zone by your entryway for keys, mail and bags. A small table, a few hooks, and a decorative box can do wonders for keeping your space functional and stylish.

Design Tip: Use area rugs and furniture placement to visually define different zones in an open-concept space.

STEP 4: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU
Your home should be a reflection of who you are and what you love. Think about what truly inspires you and bring those elements into your space.

  • Artwork: A well-placed piece of art can set the tone for an entire room. Choose pieces that make you feel something—whether that's motivation, serenity or joy.
  • Colors: Color psychology is real! Soft blues and greens are calming, yellows and oranges bring warmth and energy, and neutrals provide balance. Find a palette that resonates with you and incorporate it through paint, decor or textiles.
  • Plants: Greenery is scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve air quality. If you're not a plant person, start with easy-care options like snake plants or pothos.

Design Tip: Create a vision board for your space before making changes. This helps you stay focused on the overall feel and function you want to achieve. If you need some professional help, bring in a designer. You will get it right the first time without the guesswork involved.

STEP 5: MAKE IT FUNCTIONAL, BUT DON'T FORGET THE COZY
A well-designed home is a balance of beauty and practicality. You want your space to be functional, but you also want it to feel like a sanctuary.

  • Smart Storage: Invest in furniture that does double duty—ottomans with storage, cabinets or stylish baskets to keep things organized ... without sacrificing aesthetic.
  • Textures & Layers: Soft textiles like throw blankets, plush rugs, and linen curtains add warmth and dimension to a space. They make a room feel finished and inviting.
  • Scent & Sound: Don't underestimate the power of scent and sound. A diffuser with calming essential oils, a soft playlist in the background or the gentle flicker of a candle can completely change the energy of a room.

Design Tip: Keep a few cozy elements within reach—like a basket of throw blankets in the living room or a candle near your favorite chair—to make relaxation effortless.

Creating an inspiring, functional space isn't about perfection—it's about intention. The goal is to create a space that helps you feel at peace, stay productive and recharge when you need it most.

Start with one small change today. Maybe it's decluttering a single drawer, swapping out your light bulbs, or adding a plant to your workspace. Each intentional choice brings you one step closer to a space that truly supports your busy life.
