Many women struggle to keep the scales of family and career balanced, and the weekend is hardly enough time to catch up on chores, rest, and parenting/spouse time, not to mention alone time. But it is possible to find that elusive equilibrium by deciding which tasks, no matter how big or small, are most important to you.
First thing's first, set your priorities. If spending time with girlfriends is a priority, put it on your calendar. If making it to every one of your child's sporting events, plays, competitions, etc. is essential for you, schedule it. Whatever is highest on your priority list should go into your planner or Smartphone first. Work all other things around what you value most.
Get everyone on board with your priorities. It's hard to sail a ship alone, and you'll need support in keeping your career afloat, if that is what you decide is right for you. Talk to your family and make sure you all understand the sacrifices that are required of your work. By allowing your spouse and children to voice their opinions, you will know how much travel or how many long hours you can swing and still have an acceptable amount of time at home.
Your decisions have an impact on those around you. Consider these questions when setting your priorities:
- How much time do you want to spend at home with your family?
- How much travel are you willing to take on for your career?
- Is working full time an option for you, or do you need to cut back to half time?
- Can you complete all of your work by 5 p.m., or will you regularly work longer hours?
You may need to have a discussion with your employer if your workload is making your priority list unbalanced. Ultimately, only you can decide what is most important to you. Your priorities should reflect a lifestyle that leaves you happy, fulfilled, and feeling successful whether it be at work, at home, or both.
