Just five weeks ago, Local First set out to rally West Michigan around the local food system. The goal was to get one thousand people to take The 10x10 Pledge–a pledge to shift $10 of your weekly food budget to local sources for ten weeks. The one thousandth pledge was taken over the weekend. With one thousand people from the community participating, a collective $100,000 will be shifted into the West Michigan food economy.

Grand Rapids OB/GYN is pleased to announced it is moving to Cascade beginning October 1. The new office is located at 5060 Cascade Rd SE, Ste C, Grand Rapids, MI. They will continue to offer the most advanced OB/GYN services available. In addition to traditional OB/GYN care, the office is able to perform many services within the office setting including endometrial ablation, tubal sterilization using the Essure method, hysteroscopy, and InterStim for bladder dysfunction.

Spotlight616, LLC will host Style Battle 2012 This Is Art, a unique and electrifying fashion competition among local retailers and fashion professionals, on September 27 at the Goei Center in downtown Grand Rapids.

Local retailers and designers, alongside a team of fashion professionals, will spontaneously put together four completed looks live in front of an audience in a timed three-hour competition. Each team includes one photographer, one makeup artist, one hairdresser, four models, and a retail stylist or designer. The culmination of the evening will be a runway show of each teams’ efforts along with a slide show of images that are created throughout the night. A $1,000 prize will be awarded by popular vote and a panel of professional judges, including Brian Weaver, creative director at Kenneth Cole Productions NY, will provide the top cash prize of $2,000.

ArtPrize’s Fashion Force Challenge, a designer-driven competition, took place at Monte’s Lounge in July of this year. The winner of that event, Liesl Geneva, owner of Apparel Artistry, will represent ArtPrize’s showcase team as the official Fashion Ambassador at Style Battle. Her designs will be exhibited not only at Style Battle but will also be available as a limited edition line of merchandise for 2012 in the ArtPrize HUB Store.

Ten percent of all ticket sales will go to Artists Creating Together (ACT), an organization that works to empower and increase learning skills in students with disabilities by bringing them together with artists to work on projects ranging from visual arts to theater and dance. ACT will be hosting a community painting party during the event, the results of which will be auctioned off live from the runway.

Siegel Jewelers will be on hand to give away gift cards and the chance to win a half carat diamond.

Guest styling stations will be available for attendees for makeup applications and hair styling. All tips benefit to ACT.

VIP Level Two attendees will be able to relax and watch the creative process unfold from upscale lounges provided by Haworth and Interphase Interiors.
