Nestlings Diaper Bank recently received a $1,000 grant from the Allendale Greatest Needs Fund of the Allendale Community Foundation to diaper low income babies in Allendale.
Babies left in dirty diapers cry more frequently causing stressed caregivers and increasing the odds of abuse. Long-term exposure causes physical and emotional health problems including developmental issues. Many families struggle to diaper their children and sacrifice on food, rent, and utilities while some even risk stealing.
Nestlings a 501(c)(3) non-profit diaper bank clearinghouse founded in 2011 combats the issue of "Diaper Need" in Ottawa County by providing diapers free of charge to pantries, social service agencies, churches, and shelters to hand out through their programs. More than fifty thousand diapers have been given away so far this year by Nestlings to those in need.
Nestlings collaborates with Valley Church's Diaper Store in Allendale at 5980 Lake Michigan Drive to eliminate diaper need. Diapers are a large unmet need that fall into a void of items not covered by State or Federal assistance programs. Occasionally a pantry, church, or agency may get diapers into their programs but they go out as fast as they come in. Nestlings goal is to provide a consistent supply of diapers available in all sizes to these programs.
The Allendale Greatest Needs Fund of the Allendale Community Foundation grant dollars will be used to buy diapers specifically for the Valley Church Diaper Store in Allendale. On the second and fourth Saturday of every month, the Valley Church Diaper Store distributes diapers, free of charge to families in need, sent to them by Love Inc.; one pack of diapers, one pack of wipes, and one tube of diaper rash cream are included.
