"You should take good care of your 'soup coolers.' The lover in your life will thank you." —Latesha Lipscomb
When West Michigan Woman conversation turned to finding THE lip color, contributing writer Missy Black caught up with beauty guru Latesha Lipscomb, of I GOT FACE Cosmetic Concierge, to talk about lipsticks that make her smile.
MB: How do you choose the "right" lipstick color?
LL: Great question! Believe it or not, it's really not that complicated. Lipstick for me is all about feeling. I love lipstick, because it enables you to wear your heart on your face. Some days a woman can feel bold, beautiful, and bright, inspiring her to wear a gorgeous coral satin lipstick that really pops. The next day she may feel dark and mystical, and wear a matte lipstick that's a deep vampy shade. When shopping for lipstick I'd highly encourage you to find a shade that's for everyday wear, and a shade that's more of an experiment. You'll never know what's right for you if you don't try something new.
MB: Is it all about skin tones?
LL: Absolutely not! Lipstick is about adventure and loving the skin you're in. It requires some basic understanding of colors and skin tones, but at the end of the day, a great face is about defying the rules. Whether you're fair, medium, olive, or dark has little to do with self-expression.
MB: What's the rule with red? It looks great, but seems hard to pull off.
LL: Reds can be tricky—but when you find the perfect red lipstick for your complexion, it can be life-changing. Red lipstick never goes out of style. This is where some basic color knowledge or a solid relationship with an artist at your favorite beauty counter becomes valuable. That artist can recommend a red shade that has blue, brown, or burgundy undertones for darker skin, and coral or dark red lipsticks with pink undertones for those with fair skin. For those who fall in the middle, brick red or cranberry shades are a great place to start. A good red lipstick is a quintessential accessory: Every woman should be armed with at least one that works for her.
MB: What's trending this season in lipsticks?
LL: On the runway we're seeing a lot of pale pinks with nude, neutral makeup on models. By the summer, we'll see more women rocking a punctuated red lip—where you start off darker in the center and gradually go lighter as you move out to the corners.
MB: What are the most common mistakes you see?
LL: Non-use or misuse of a good lip liner. Lining your lips with a comparable liner really gives your lipstick definition and form. Whether you want your kisser to appear bigger because you have thin lips or you want to play them down because you have small lips, lining is a necessary part of the process.
MB: What are some great lipsticks to try?
LL: There are several lip products that I am head over heels for that can fit every budget. Because these products range in price from $2.99 and up, I always recommend your local ULTA Beauty store as a great place to start.
Because matte lipsticks have been all the rage lately, I recommend NYX Cosmetics as a starting point for your next purchase. For the young, hip professional who wants to make a statement without saying a word, I recommend Pure Red, Shocking Pink, or Indie Flick as great summer lipstick options.
For the diva on the dime who loves bold color and long-lasting wear, try the new Ruby Kisses Lip Lacquers in Bubblegum Pink and Midnight Plum Black—two of my ultimate faves.
For the MAC girl who wants to invest in neutral fleshy-tone lipsticks, my go-to shades include Hue, High Tea, Myth, Honey Love, and Viva Glam II—all of which you can play up with a stunning MAC Lipglass to add a little shine to your pout. Combinations like this are also great for the working woman looking for something neutral she can wear day or night.
Finally, for lipstick junkies like me, I recommend trying out bold, brave brands like Lime Crime and Lipstick Queen. Practically everything they make is awesome. I'm also a fan of the feeling I get when swiping on a luxurious Chanel lipstick for an evening out on the town, and how gorgeous I feel whenever I use a Sephora Crème Lip Stain—these high-coverage, beautiful lippies contain avocado oil for a texture that transforms as you wear it.
