After decades away, Sue Gifford is back in the place where it all began.
A Grand Rapids native and graduate of Aquinas College, Gifford recently returned to West Michigan to take on a new chapter in a career marked by purpose, people, and deep community impact. As the new Senior Director of Philanthropy for Samaritas in the western region, she brings her signature approach: relational, mission-driven, and rounded in compassion. This new role feels less like a career move and more like coming home.
"I'm honored to step into the role of Senior Director of Philanthropy with Samaritas in West Michigan," Gifford said. "I'm inspired to raise awareness and build sustainable support so that the most vulnerable, especially children and seniors, are safe, nourished, and empowered to thrive. 'Make love your aim.' 1 Corinthians 14:1."
With more than three decades of experience in customer relations and 16 years in nonprofit fundraising, Gifford has left a mark in both Michigan and Arizona. Her work has included leadership positions at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine, University of Michigan Health-West Foundation, Clark Retirement Community Foundation, and Child Crisis Arizona. Throughout her career, she has led major, legacy, and campaign gift efforts, always centering the relationships that make those efforts sustainable.
"Sue's impact on our organization has been extraordinary," said Torrie A. Taj, CEO of Child Crisis Arizona. "Her dedication to building lasting relationships with our donors has been crucial to our mission."
Though her path has taken her across the country and into high-impact roles, Gifford remains deeply grounded. Her studies in political science and international studies at Aquinas College shaped her worldview and passion for service. Over the years, she has taken on advisory roles, mentored emerging leaders, and advocated for women stepping into positions of influence.
Now, surrounded by family and friends, Gifford is embracing the opportunity to give back to the community that helped shape her; bringing with her decades of experience and a heart rooted in service.
