Mick Fleetwood Coffee Company Zeroes in on Grand Rapids for Test Market

When I learned that Mick Fleetwood (yes, that Mick Fleetwood) had launched his own coffee company, I was intrigued. When I learned Grand Rapids had been selected as the company's initial test market before launching nationally, my interest was even more piqued. We're (obviously) a cool city, but what landed us in the direct sights of such an international music legend? Long story short: we're a mid-sized market that drinks a lot of coffee.

Considering I'm one of countless people I know who have been horrendously over-caffeinated since about the age of 16, this tracks.

Fleetwood, best known as co-founder of the iconic band Fleetwood Mac, is a longtime Hawaii resident and has lived near a coffee bean farm for years. And if you can believe it, his passion for coffee matches that of music.

"Coffee is more than a beverage, it's a daily ritual," Fleetwood said. "For those who count themselves among these aficionados, Mick Fleetwood Coffee's thoughtful selection of beans and artful approach to roasting creates a superior coffee that will be a welcome addition to their daily routine."

The Mick Fleetwood Coffee Company uses beans thoughtfully grown in Hawaii, Central America and Kenya, and functions as a direct-to-consumer company where coffee lovers can order their selected brews and merchandise (such as coffee mugs and hats), along with becoming members of the MFCC VIP program. In addition to a soon-to-arrive Restaurant Blend, MFCC's current blends include:

  • The Hawaiian Blend, described as an aromatic blend of fruits, nuts and cocoa, which delivers a medium bodied taste, low acidity and a breezy sense of the tropics.
  • The Signature Blend, a uniquely earthy and full-bodied blend of chocolate and toffee with just enough sweetness to bring it all home.
  • The Kenyan Blend, which features almond, caramel and a slight hint of cocoa, inspiring a mellow acidity (think fresh garden tomato), making this medium-bodied creation a fan favorite.

As the company grows, MFCC representative Jim Berline emphasized that they anticipate reacting to opportunities as they present themselves down the line, which could potentially include eventual b2b relationships.

Berline also shared that Michigan, interestingly enough, is also home to some of the company's investors, not to mention the Flushing facility where MFCC's coffee beans will be ground, roasted and bagged for shipping to coffee lovers around the world.

"If coffee could go platinum, this is the stuff," Fleetwood said.

After recently trying the Signature Blend for myself, I'm inclined to agree.

"I take my coffee as serious as I do my music," Fleetwood continued. "I've always said any coffee with my name on it has to be the finest, most savory coffee on the planet. For coffee aficionados and casual coffee drinkers alike, I've got a blend here with your name on it."
