High-Fashion Show Raises Funds for Cancer and Disease Research, Science Education

Engage with the West Michigan Woman Community!

The eighth annual Couture for a Cure, a runway fashion show raising funds for cancer and disease research and science education, takes place Thursday, October 10, at Van Andel Institute (VAI).

The Amway-sponsored event, hosted by VAI and presented by Leigh’s, features a cocktail reception, strolling dinner, giveaways, and a fashion presentation. The featured designer, Cynthia Rose, has been showcased in publications such as Elle, Avenue, and Home & Garden. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will go directly to research and science education at VAI.

“It’s exciting when the world of high-fashion comes to our own community, and the event has grown each year,” said Carol Van Andel. “It’s a fun night out, but it’s also so important to support the work that’s being done here to fight cancer and disease.”

CureThis year, the event highlights Van Andel Education Institute: specifically, the Science Academy.

“Not everyone is familiar with our education programs that are also changing lives every day,” Van Andel explained. “Our educators are preparing today’s youth to be the scientists and discovery-makers of the future by giving them opportunities to think and act like scientists in real-world situations.”

The event will feature ARTISTRY skincare and cosmetics, exclusively from Amway, both in the beauty lounge (where guests are invited to receive makeup touch-ups) and on the runway.

"Amway is proud to sponsor Couture for a Cure for a second year and support the vital research being done in our community," said Candace Matthews, chief marketing officer for Amway and this year’s emcee. "We are delighted to play a part in bringing the runway to Grand Rapids for a fun and fashionable evening."

In addition, an exclusive Purple Community ring from Expression Rings of Hope will be available for purchase, with a portion of sales donated to VAI. The event begins at 6 p.m., and cocktail attire is suggested. General admission and VIP tickets are available by visiting www.vai.org.
