Downtown Holland to Host First Fourth of July Celebration

Engage with the West Michigan Woman Community!

Downtown Holland will host its first Fourth of July Celebration on Thursday, July 4. More than forty shops, boutiques, galleries, and restaurants will be open for business that day, many of them offering discounts and promotions for the holiday. The popular Street Performer Series will also take place that evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m., with a special appearance by a stilt walker extraordinaire.

Patrons are invited to “Celebrate and Save” on the Fourth of July by wearing red, white, or blue to receive twenty percent off of a single item at participating businesses. Stores participating in the “Celebrate and Save” sale or offering other special offers will be easily identifiable by the patriotic balloon tied to their entrance door. While business hours will vary, many businesses will be open from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. for the celebration.

“The 'Celebrate and Save' sale is just one more way of letting visitors know how happy we are that they’ve chosen to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with their friends and families here in downtown Holland,” said Kara de Alvare, Interim Marketing Coordinator for Downtown Holland.

From 6:30-8:30 p.m. that same evening, more than thirty talented street performers will line 8th Street, entertaining the crowds with a variety of performance art. Musicians, jugglers, aerial acrobats, dancers, magicians, caricature artists, and more will all perform for free. (Though tipping is highly encouraged!) And don’t forget to look up to catch a glimpse of Michael Hayataka, the amazing stilt walker. The weekly Street Performer Series is co-sponsored by Gentex Corporation, with support from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs through the Holland Area Arts Council.

“Between the street performers, the large number of shoppers and diners expected downtown, and the American flags lining 8th Street, we are looking forward to a very festive 4th of July Celebration this year, with hopes to expand the event in the years to come,” said de Alvare.

In addition to the Fourth of July Celebration in downtown Holland, JQ99.3, and The Pledge radio stations will be hosting their annual Celebration Freedom event at Kollen Park, just a short walk from downtown. The celebration kicks off at 2 p.m. with children’s inflatables, games, food vendors, and more. The evening will conclude with fireworks at dusk.
