Play with Your Food! Fruit and Vegetable Carving Competition this Weekend

Engage with the West Michigan Woman Community!

The entire community is invited to attend The Carve V at the Holland Farmers Market this Friday, October 5 at 5 p.m. and Saturday, October 6 at 8 a.m. During this U.S. Collegiate National Fruit and Vegetable Carving Competition, sponsored by Alpen Rose Restaurant, three teams of culinary students from colleges will show off their creative talent and carving skills as they create works of art out of local produce donated by Visser Farms.

On Friday, individual carvers will have three hours to put together their entire display using only the produce provided, toothpicks, and skewers. Saturday's event involves the entire college team. Team members will work together to carve one large display that will be placed on an eight-foot table. A variety of fruits and vegetables will be provided and the teams can also incorporate their own produce, herbs, spices, and beans into their carving. You won’t believe your eyes at the incredible works of art created out of ordinary produce during this five-hour timed event,

The third event is the People’s Choice Competition. As part of this event, eight professional carvers will bring a pre-carved sculpture for display. The public is invited to view all of the carved works and vote for their favorite on Saturday from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The display with the most votes will win the People’s Choice Award and a generous cash prize.

The final compulsory event for the student carvers takes place at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. This event challenges individual team members to show off their technical skills, as each carver will be provided the same produce item and will be carving to show off their own unique talents.

All finished pieces in the competition will be evaluated by a team of judges that includes carving professionals. The college team with the most combined points wins the overall competition. The winning schools will receive gift certificates that can be redeemed for carving tools to benefit their programs.

The public is also invited to attend the free seminar and carving demonstrations on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
