Staying Pawsitive for a Good Cause

Engage with the West Michigan Woman Community!

Despite the challenges of 2020, The Humane Society of West Michigan isn't slowing down its efforts to fundraise and help animals in need—and you could get in on the action!

The eighth annual Bark in the Dark event offers plenty of fun, in-person and virtual opportunities for community members to get involved in—starting with an in-person kickoff on Saturday, October 3, at HSWM.

The kickoff will be an opportunity for attendees to pick up their wag bag (filled with goodies for you and your furry friend), visit sponsor booths, sign up to walk or run in HSWM's Dog Day Out program, and even meet some adoptable dogs. Those not comfortable with attending in person could have their wag bag shipped, for a small fee.

The week following the kickoff, attendees could look forward to fun daily themes, a pet costume contest, virtual check-ins, and more. Each participant will have the opportunity to pledge to walk the distance of their choice and fundraise within their personal network to support the efforts and animals at HSWM. All proceeds from Bark in the Dark benefit animals in need at HSWM, with an event fundraising goal of $90,000.

Elena Winger, Social Media and Audience Development Coordinator, Serendipity Media, is especially looking forward to attending for the first time and helping the cause.

"2020 has been well, terrible. But if there's one thing I'm looking forward to, it's celebrating Halloween and supporting a great cause with my new three-legged friend, Stumpy," said Winger, who recently adopted Stumpy from a local humane society after he was in a car accident and lost one of his rear legs. "We have an impressive couples costume idea for the costume contest and we're both looking forward to the in-person kickoff event.

"Now, more than ever, shelters are facing a financial strain due to the growing number of animals that people can no longer financially support or care for. This is our chance to give back to shelters and have some fun! Stay tuned for our costume."

Tickets for Bark in the Dark are $35 for adults, $15 for ages 5 – 21, and free for kids under 5. Tickets include a wag bag, a limited-edition Bark in the Dark T-shirt, and—for those 21 and upfor those 21 and uptwo beverages to take home and enjoy throughout the week!
