Keep Learning!

Engage with the West Michigan Woman Community!

You are never too old to learn something new! Take classes in your areas of interests, and look to learn from experts who are working in your new field of interest. Your instructors will help you fast-forward your learning and desires, from topics on how to swim to how to start a business.

Maybe you are interested in starting your own business. Make sure the area you plan to work in is something you love to do—something you are passionate about, whether you get paid or not. Be open and willing to learn from someone else. Locate a person who already works in your area of interest and has your same virtues and beliefs; a mentor; an expert who is active in the same area of your interest, and is willing to take you on and help you learn from them. They typically love to share their knowledge, especially if you willing to help them accomplish one of their own goals. Being mentored will help you immensely, especially in creating a path for you to gain important knowledge and inside information about the mentor’s expertise. By learning from others’ successes and mistakes, you can make faster progress in your own new passionate career.

If you are already a business owner and would like to pass your business knowledge on to another, share your virtues and beliefs with your trainees by becoming a mentor. You are a model for others in your field of expertise. Teach them how to use innovation and creativity. You can mentor them and teach them what you know.

Even if you are not looking to start or run a business, always seek advice from experts who profess your same virtues. Never stop attending classes and reading articles and books on your favorite topics.

Keep in mind the learning you do ultimately is to create a more well-rounded you. Take "fun" classes as well as those that might create a new level of understanding, which will create security for you in new knowledge. If your trusted advisors offer classes, take the time to go to them and increase your understanding. Without new knowledge and different ideas, it’s difficult to move forward and improve your situation.
