Many employees spend eight hours a day in front of a computer screen, where the only opportunity to use creativity is jazzing up the salutation at the end of an e-mail. If you feel yourself headed toward an occupational plateau, it may be time for a change of scenery. Wine and Canvas will set up shop in any office space and provide all materials necessary for participants to create paintings. When Serendipity Media employees took part in the activity during the annual sales retreat, Wine and Canvas teachers laid out easels, canvases, paints, and brushes on long tables in the middle of the office. Although we were still in our working environment, the activity infused a splash of color and a different perspective on the office. The ideas that flowed from our minds to our canvases bled over into our desk areas and infused creativity into the workplace, long after the session was completed.
Empower
Wine and Canvas teachers are there to lead groups step-by-step through painting the featured artwork of the week. However, Serendipity Media employees used a little creative license during our team building session. Many of us went ahead of the teacher and finished our paintings early. Some used a completely different color palette than was suggested. Others took the advice of the teacher word for word. In an office environment, it is important to promote many opinions and ideas—in other words, there is more than one way to get the job done. Each employee brings a different background and perspective to the mix, and that's a good thing! Keep your company engaging and surprising to clients by empowering employees to contribute their own ideas.
Accept
Wine and Canvas sessions promote conversation throughout, and Serendipity Media employees found that from the constant chatter came a new understanding of each other. During the work day, there is little time for socializing. When employees get together outside of their normal work environment they are able to connect on a level other than business. Wine and Canvas gave Serendipity Media employees a shared experience, and an opportunity to relate to each other outside of work. Forming like memories brings employees together and helps them to understand and respect each other.
