Wine & Wig, the premier party of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in West Michigan, is quickly approaching and we couldn't be more excited.
We're pleased to share that Tim Penning has been announced as our featured speaker for the evening.
Timothy Penning, Ph.D., APR, Fellow PRSA is a tenured professor who teaches courses in public relations and communication management in the School of Communications at Grand Valley State University. Tim's wife, Cindy Kikkert-Penning, was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in February 2012, and a brain tumor in December 2013. Throughout her chemo, radiation, surgeries and countless appointments—which continue today—Tim has been by Cindy's side.
"Sharing the caregiver perspective is important because there are so many people in this situation, and they are often not recognized as being impacted by cancer or whatever afflicts their loved ones," said Tim. "They can feel isolated, overwhelmed and at the same time wonder if they're doing enough. Caregivers go through the emotional, if not physical, impact of diagnosis and ongoing treatment."
Tim and Cindy were featured on WZZM last year as Cindy prepared for her 17th consecutive Fifth Third River Bank Run. Cindy is also the cover profile for the October/November issue of West Michigan Woman.
"I hope attendees—caregivers, patients, medical professionals and others—will see the importance of being a caregiver, recognize what can and can't be done, and feel encouraged," said Tim.
Joining forces for Wine & Wig to find a cure for breast cancer and support local women with research, diagnostic, treatment and emotional support are charity partners Susan G. Komen Michigan, American Cancer Society, Gilda's Club Grand Rapids and the Van Andel Institute. To date, the event has raised $132,000, with last year's event raising $46,200.
Wine & Wig will be held on October 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. Tickets and sponsorships can be purchased at www.wineandwig.com. Wine & Wig's Wigtastic sponsors are Design 1 Salon Spa, Meijer and Cumulus Media.
