Workforce Specialist, Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center

A mom at 15 years old, Cynthia Owens knew she wasn’t going to let teen mom stereotypes hinder her dreams. After graduating on time and 15 consequential years of steady factory work, Cynthia started working at Ellington Academy of Arts and Technology. It’s there she fell in love with being able to service and mentor youth, and became inspired for the future.

In 2021, Cynthia launched Dream K.I.M Speaks with a mission to empower and inspire the next generation by providing impactful mentoring, comprehensive education and uplifting celebrations. She’s since published two books, and as the Workforce Specialist at Gerald R. Ford Job Corps Center, has reconnected the center to the community post-COVID by challenging years-old misconceptions and replacing them with understanding of the program’s true mission. Cynthia believes the loudest sound that comes from our youth can be heard in their silence, and that watching their behavior helps determine their true needs.

She shares, “I needed to go back and be the blueprint to others. I don’t want anyone to worry about resources and support. I’ve become the walking yellow pages! If I don’t have a connection, give me a day and I will find one. I’m here to help others knock down those barriers that prevent them from moving forward.”
