Inclusion Host and Producer, Mutually Inclusive, WGVU Public Media
An award-winning Asian American journalist, Kylie Ambu has more than six years of experience reporting and found a home with WGVU Public Media in 2020—working to champion our community’s diverse and often underrepresented stories. Her goal is to provide representation and education about our community for our community, believing that everyone has a story deserving of being told.
Kylie’s local PBS show Mutually Inclusive can be found on WGVU Public Media and the Michigan Learning Channel. Its recent documentary, which focuses on Japanese American soldiers of WWII and local veteran, the late Virgil Nishimura-Westdale, was a partnership with the Grand Rapids Asian Pacific Foundation and received a 2024 Michigan Regional Emmy Award. Kylie is grateful for WGVU, which has allowed her the platform to tell these stories, and for the community who’ve opened shared their lives.
Kylie shares, “I’d grown up not seeing people with my background represented in media, and that bled into my experiences as a young reporter in TV newsrooms. I saw a pattern that stories representing minority groups were often treated differently, getting less support or not getting picked up at all. However, since getting the opportunity with WGVU to connect on diverse, inclusive stories in West Michigan, I know now that community sits at the center of my motivation.”
