Diversity Coordinator, Wedgwood Christian Services

Arlan Palmer is a dedicated leader in the Grand Rapids community. As Chaplain and Diversity Coordinator at Wedgwood Christian Services, he’s spent 38 years supporting vulnerable youth and families, particularly those navigating the foster care system. Pastor Arlan provides care to children in Wedgwood’s residential program who’ve experienced severe trauma. He is intentional about walking alongside each residential client as they explore their own beliefs.

Pastor Arlan also serves as a support to staff members, a workforce that is 70% women, and ensures these individuals have a safe space if they’re experiencing post-secondary trauma. In addition, Pastor Arlan oversees the Diversity Committee and leads its associated efforts throughout the organization. He’s been an advocate for not only cultural diversity, but gender diversity among the leadership and board members. Pastor Arlan’s tireless work in diversity, equity, and inclusion positions him as a strong advocate for both women and girls, amplifying their voices and championing their causes throughout the community.

He says, “I encourage other men specifically to think about what they are doing in their workplace to uplift the feelings of the women around them. They need to be aware of their biases that may be contributing to a workplace culture that is not conducive to women. I truly believe it starts by having diverse voices at the table.”
