For years, Clay Powell knew of a cyst on his right kidney. It would show up in testing, but it was fairly small.
“Unfortunately, at the time I chose not to get further testing and my physician did not insist,” he said.
A few days prior to his retirement in January 2023, an ultrasound was performed to diagnose suspected gallbladder issues.
“That is when the cancer was discovered on my right kidney,” he said. “The doctor said it was slow growing and surgery could be performed in the next several months. In April, 2023, I had surgery, a Robot Assisted Radical Nephrectomy, removing my entire kidney. I learned after surgery that the cancer was worse than the original imaging had shown, and had spread to the renal vein. The good news was that they were pretty sure they were able to remove all the cancer.”
He and his wife Deb were thankful they did not postpone the surgery.
“I would encourage everyone not to discount test results—even if they seem redundant or inconclusive, and to always be an advocate for your own health instead of relying on medical opinions,” Clay said. “You know your body better than anyone!”
All of Clay’s scans and tests since the surgery have come back negative.
He’s is now retired and his passions include traveling, reading, genealogy, cooking, and spending time with family.
