Are sound waves the future of cancer treatment? Join Dr. Clifford Cho of Van Andel Institute and University of Michigan Health-West for a look at histotripsy, an innovative approach that uses ultrasound waves to treat liver tumors without surgery. Additionally, he’ll highlight how studying the immune system may pave the way for improved cancer care.

This fundraising event will be held Wednesday, November 18, 2026 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Van Andel Institute. It directly benefits VAI’s biomedical research and education initiatives, including groundbreaking research into cancer and Parkinson’s, as well as innovative K–12 and graduate education programs that inspire and train the next generation of scientists and leaders.

This unique event will feature networking opportunities, delicious fare and a presentation by Dr. Cho, a surgeon-scientist, who will give attendees an inside look at emerging innovations in cancer treatment. Dr. Cho’s pioneering discoveries have led to FDA approval of histotripsy as a treatment for liver cancer. This breakthrough technique uses ultrasound waves to disrupt tumors and elicit an immune response, which helps the body better fight cancer cells. Dr. Cho is a professor in Van Andel Institute’s Department of Cell Biology, chief medical officer of University of Michigan Health-West, and a professor at the University of Michigan

The luncheon continues VAI’s 30th anniversary celebrations, as the Institute marks three decades of discovery, innovation, and hope. Please contact Annie Pond at [email protected] to secure your sponsorship or ticket purchase today!
