Fall’s Smartest Buys

Your favorite outfits of the season are just a step away, inside Sparrow Boutique in Muskegon. Owner Kristi Kettler talks trade show finds and what you'll want to start looking for.

"I'm seeing a ton of chunky sweaters," said Kettler. "They're getting an update with nubby fabrics or interesting hemlines and zipper detailing." From quilting fabric to oversized sweaters, it's always a good idea to load up on cozy essentials come fall. Kettler suggests investing in a pair of moto skinny jeans (with motocross-inspired seaming and stitching) and to watch for the resurgence of plaid. From jackets to skirts, you'll find it in more unexpected separates than the usual button-down shirt: "They're doing it in chiffon and different fabrics."

When it comes to color, embrace the dark side. Seek out rich tones in merlot, emerald, and deep cobalt blue. Black and white will be strong this year, as will statement necklaces. "It's still pretty hot. People love to dress up an outfit with them."

Kettler is excited about the structured sweater/sweatshirt hybrid styles. "It feels like you are wearing your favorite sweatshirt." Paired with leggings or skinny jeans, it's a look that caters to being comfy, yet pulled together. "It's great for traveling and great for work when you pair it with fancier jewelry. It will be in people's closets for a long time."

As we head into cooler temps, Kettler's last piece of advice has to do with transition pieces. "I'm a big believer in being able to wear your summer dresses into fall." By simply pairing with leggings, throwing a cardigan over it, or mixing in a fall bootie, your summer staples find longevity. Layering a jean jacket over longer tunics or your fun tank tops means you could wear them year round.
