At Home With Avenues by Porter Hills

We all want peace of mind for ourselves and our loved ones as we continue to age. Barb Rohwer and her husband Milt have found that peace through an innovative program called Avenues by Porter Hills.

“What we like about Avenues is the focus the program has on wellness, and also knowing that if our health changes we will be able to stay at home rather than move to seek long-term care services,” Barb said.

Some time after retiring from her position with IBM, Barb personally experienced the reality of the need for advocacy and long-term care services among older people. Additionally, she realized the burden lack of planning can place on family members.

“My father lived in Holland and the last five or six years of his life he had many health issues. He did not have any kind of long-term care insurance and no knowledgeable medical advocate, only the help of busy family members.”

After her father died, the Rohwers began considering plans for their own long-term care, but always with the desire to stay within the comfort of their home.

“We live in Heritage Hill and thoroughly enjoy the idea of just being able to walk out the door and go to downtown restaurants, the symphony, the theater, and our church; all a few blocks away. Staying in our home is very important to us.”

After researching options, the Rohwers found Avenues by Porter Hills. With Avenues, members are assured a comprehensive package of long-term care services that enable them to remain independent and live at home even as their health needs change.

“It’s a feeling of security should anything happen to me or Milt. We don’t have to depend on family members to provide services,” Barb said.
