Surf's Up!

Ever thought you needed to hop on a plane to California to catch some wicked waves? Guess again! The Inaugural Great Lakes Surf Festival, taking place August 18, 2018, in Muskegon, is a celebration of surf culture—unsalted. Learn more about this family-friendly surf event that's happening right in your own backyard.

The brainchild of influential and highly accomplished Great Lakes water athlete Joe Bidawid, the Great Lakes Surf Festival seeks to empower the rise of the next surf generation on the Great Lakes.

"Imagine a late summer day on an amazing beach, doing what you love—surrounded by so many people from all over the Great Lakes who share the same passion!" said Bidawid.

Taking place at Pere Marquette Beach in Muskegon, the festival will have over 40 activities for experts and newbies alike to enjoy. From yoga sessions, beginner surfing, standup paddling and kayaking to educational workshops, clinics in various boardsports, kids sand castle building and family portraits, this is truly a family-friendly event with something for everyone.

"Our goal is to offer a fun, safe and unforgettable beach experience. We are largely focused on novice and casual eventgoers who just want to take in the surf culture experience—which dates back to the 1960s," said Bidawid. "Guests can enjoy music and food including several healthy options including raw juices, smoothies and kombucha!"

A large number of retailers and industry brands are also expected to host booths and sponsor raffles.

"We're hoping to bring together experienced riders of all disciplines—and because I'm actively involved in several boardsports myself, I felt the timing was right to have a surf festival here in the Great Lakes, especially when it's a concept that hasn't been explored here before."

Festivalgoers are also afforded the opportunity to tent camp directly on the beach or RV camp nearby. To learn more and register for the event, visit Great Lakes Surf Festival.
