Don’t Just Make a Meal. Make a Difference.

Engage with the West Michigan Woman Community!

Whether you're practiced in making risotto or can barely make macaroni and cheese from a box, the Downtown Market's new Cook for a Cause program offers an opportunity to learn new skills, make a meal and lend a hand.

Private and corporate event groups can now work directly with chefs in the Downtown Market Teaching Kitchen to create a healthy and delicious "one-pan" dinner, which will then be assembled and delivered directly to those in need throughout the community via a nonprofit Market partner of the group's choice.

"The idea is for someone to come in with their group, learn new skills and work together," said Kate Klemp, director of development and community relations, Downtown Market. "And maybe you make 200 enchiladas for the community. It's a team-building experience, but it's also a give-back experience."

Groups could choose to benefit Degage Ministries, HQ, the Grand Rapids African American Health Institute, Family Promise or the YWCA West Central Michigan Sojourner House—by following three simple steps:

  1. Choose one of the Market's partner organizations in need of healthy, home-cooked meals.

  2. Take the class and follow along while one of the Market's chefs makes a meal for you to eat—and you make a meal to donate.

  3. Assemble and package the donated meal. It'll be immediately provided to the organization of your choice.

Cook for a Cause is a fun and interactive opportunity for any group—private or corporate—to work together and accomplish a goal, to learn more about the community, and to step in and fill a great need.

"When the community comes together," Klemp said, "amazing things happen."
